Fiction Fervor

Q: Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

I HATE historical fiction, of any kind, by any author.  I love to watch historical movies, but I hate to actually READ the dialect.  I also dislike general contemporary fiction as a whole, but I will occasionally find myself interested in a novel of that genre here or there.

What books do you refuse to read?

I like historical fiction – if there’s a pot i’m interested in, I don’t like it wholesale. I love The Shadow of the Wind and tons of other books that flash back into the past. It also depends on the dialect too – I love Victorian era fiction and have no problem getting into that vernacular, however books like Huckleberry Finn were totally uninteresting to me (probably why I couldn’t get into the vernacular either..)

Hope you’re having a great birthday month :D

hopping through! historical as in romances or like literary historical? cuz i’m a big fan of regency. sometimes historical is OK if I’m interested in the topic, like the Tudor periods.

Haha, I do like me some historical romance…also contemp romance. As long as there’s romance, I like it! :)

Yeah, I don’t mind historical fiction, but the dialogue does sometimes grate on my nerves a bit. I remember having to read Their Eyes Were Watching God in high school, and although there was a good story in there, I could never get passed the dialogue. Happy Friday! Reading to Penguins

Hopping through. How sad that you don’t like historical fiction. I love it. But I know lots of people don’t. I do hate reading dialect.

I’m not a big fan of historicals either, but I think for different reasons. No big contemporary fan as well. Hmm. It’s interesting to see all the different opinions!

    Happy Friday!

  7. Sharyla

Oh, I love love love historical fiction, as long as it isn’t too chalked full of facts that I get lost in. I love wrapping myself in that world and losing everything modern. I’ve even been known to go find music that matches the time period to listen to at the same time (which is SUPER easy with the Kindle Fire). Darn, now you made me crave some Historical Fiction and I have 3 books (none of them of that genre) to read for review. :(

  8. Kristan

Historical fiction is like a guilty pleasure of mine. Not a lot of people read them, but I always have to pick them up. It’s the history junky in me. Although it isn’t my favorite genre, I do like to give them a try.

I like a lot of historical fiction, although I think an author has to be really skilled to make it readable. The things I refuse to read: romance novels and other chick lit. Ugh!
